A while ago I talked about a game series called Ys. I already covered the first two games, so now it's time to talk about the Wanderers from Ys. In 1991 Nihon Falcom decided to try out something new for the third installment of their series, and they went side-scrolling.
Ys is now a side-scrolling slash'm up game with RPG elements thrown into the mix for good measure. Gone are the days of running into your foes with ramming speed, you get to jump and slash. This radical departure of the previous games met with mixed feelings. It's not that the game itself was bad, it just wasn't Ys.
Just like the previous games this one has been ported to many systems. You can find this game wandering on Genesis, MSX, NES, PC-88, PC-98, SNES and of course my favourite, the TurboGrafx CD.
In my opinion, the TurboGrafx CD version is again the best one of all, not because the graphics are excellent or because the animation is stellar, but because of the soundtrack. If there is one constant through all Ys games then it's got to be this: Excellent Music!
Unfortunately, the only way to enjoy this game is to find a second-hand copy, but if you're a fan of the series, you might find the hunt worth the rewards.
